BIOGRAPHY:

February 1999: A lot of my friends call me the “Disappearing Wizard.” You see, I’m a Muggleborn with quite a history at Hogwarts: during my second year I was Petrified by a Basilisk that had broken out of an underground chamber someplace beneath the castle which caused me to disappear from my place in the Hufflepuff common room and table in the Great Hall. When things started heating up in the Wizarding world during my fifth and sixth years, my parents got scared and kept me away from my wizarding friends during my summer holidays. They eventually got so scared after Professor Dumbledore’s death that they started talking to other parents, both Wizarding and Muggle, to try to decided what to do with me. I think what made them finally pull me out of Hogwarts half-way through my seventh year was Mr. Bones’ decision to take his family (Susan included) into hiding in June of 1997.

In January of 1998 I didn’t go back to Hogwarts. Instead, my parents contacted my father’s oldest brother who lives in America and made arrangements to have me spend the year going to a Muggle university in California where they live. More on that later.

Needless to say, I panicked. I knew that if I ever wanted to re-enter the Wizarding world and be employable, I’d need to have a complete set NEWT scores. After many “family discussions” during which I tried to maturely plead my case for staying long enough to take my exams, I convinced my parents that I needed to take them. Three weeks before I was due to leave for America Professor Marchbanks arrived at my parents’ house and I spent the next two weeks hunched over our kitchen table four hours a day. I can only say I did my best under the circumstances; with hardly any time to revise properly I was able to answer all the questions, but most in an extremely limited manner.

The day after I finished my exams I sadly bade my family good-bye and boarded the Concorde for the flight to America. Two days and three aeroplane changes later, I stepped off my last flight at the small, though busy, Sacramento Airport and made my way to the baggage claim area where I was to meet my Uncle Kenneth and my cousin, Bruce. (My Aunt Marcia didn’t come. She and Uncle Kenneth divorced three years ago and she now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, wherever that is!)

Bruce is a “freshman” at the University of California at Davis where my parents have enrolled me. He explained that because our class schedules will be different, we’d probably not be in the same classes. It didn’t matter to me; as long as I had a place to call home for the year I thought I’d be all right, if a little lonely.

And so my exile from England began. I did end up enjoying myself going to a Muggle university, touring the state of California with Bruce and Uncle Kenneth, and working “fast food” in a take-away restaurant called “Taco Bell” to earn extra spending money.

I’m back in England now, but at the moment I’m feeling rather at loose ends because I don’t know what to do with myself. I feel very detached from everything here; I became used to central heating and air conditioning, cable television, hot weather and lots of sunshine, computers and the internet (that’s really addicting, let me tell you), and not using any sort of magic at all. Anyway, I’m hoping that reconnecting with my Hogwarts friends will help me discover what I want to do with my life besides sit around my parents’ house and stare at the telly all day. Maybe the first thing I should do is visit Hogwarts and speak with Professor McGonagall...

January 2000: Well, it's a new year and a new, old me. I'm still prone to serious bouts of depression, but things are looking up. It took a while to apply to the Schools of Engineering I was hoping to get into and in November 1999 I was one of the last to be accepted into the Imperial College School of Engineering's Historical Architectural Engineering program. It's a mouthful, to say the least, but I'm really excited that I'll be learning how old buildings were put together and the techniques modern engineers are using to repair and preserve them authentically. This particular aspect of my education appeases my Muggle parents who want me to have something to fall back on should my re-entry into the Wizarding world not work out. For myself, I've taken an apprenticeship with an elderly wizard who restores old magical buildings: I'll be learning the appropriate spells to repair and preserve forgotten castles and manor houses as well as ancient family-sized dwellings which are basically held up by magic. I can hardly wait to get started.

January 2001: I've had to withdraw from Imperial College for eight months, something I really don't want to do, but because I fell off a roof I ended up in a Muggle hospital and for several weeks I wasn't stable enough to be moved to St. Mungo's. Once the move was carried out, I thought I would be healed in a week or two at the most, but my stay was a protracted one due to the mechinations and manipulations of a sadistic healer who hates Muggle-borns and Half-bloods. I'm healthy now, after a fashion; some of the potions I was given while in the healer's care gave me a life-long allergy to fish and shellfish as well as iodine. The hospital eventually settled the lawsuit the healer's patients had against him, but I still have to face him again in court; my solicitor has filed a personal injury suit against the healer and I think she's going to win it.

In the meantime, I'm holding down two receptionist positions to pay my bills. On Mondays and Fridays, I am at Susan Bones' Magical Notebook and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I help out in Hannah Abbot-Longbottom's solicitor's office. If that doesn't keep me busy enough, I've engaged several private ballet teachers to teach me the art of ballet. My friends think I'm mad for wanting to become a dancer at my age, but my theory is that if you want to learn something, immerse your self in it. The going is slow, but the discipline of my daily workouts makes me feel strong and healthy.

I plan to go back to my university courses in September. My longing to complete my studies is too strong to give up on the goals I've set for myself; as much as I like being a receptionist, I don't plan to be one for the rest of my life, especially if I want to marry and eventually have a family of my own.
